John Kervin did his undergraduate work at UBC, followed by a Ph.D. in Sociology from Johns Hopkins. His current research centres on two themes in the area of work. The first is the role of gender in the workplace, including the nature of what is culturally seen as “women’s” work, the locus of gender bias, how women’s work is compensated, and statistical issues related to identifying and remedying gender bias at work. The second theme is the sub-culture of small work groups within organizations, including formal and informal groups, and how organizational culture affects such groups. Kervin has written a research methods text, consults on issues of gender bias and pay equity, and teaches work, gender, organizations, and industrial relations.
