Undergraduate Sociology Programs at the St. George Campus

In second year, students at the University of Toronto choose one or more programs for their degree. Those who want to pursue a degree in Sociology can choose to complete a Sociology Specialist, a Sociology Major or a Sociology Minor. Note that these programs cannot be combined (no one can take both a Sociology Major and a Sociology Minor, for example).

Sociology Specialist

Students who complete a sociology specialist gain in-depth knowledge of sociological methods and theory, they achieve mastery of several sociology sub fields, and they benefit from hands-on research and writing coursework. We admit a limited number of students into the specialist program each year.

Students interested in the Specialist program normally apply and enter from the Major program, after having completed the first half of Year 2 requirements of that program as below. Students demonstrating exceptional interest and achievement in the introductory courses may enter at the end of Year 1.

Entry Requirements

Students who have achieved a minimum combined average of 80% in SOC101Y1, or a combination of SOC102H1+SOC103H1, SOC102H1+SOC150H1, SOC103H1+SOC150H1, or SOC100H1+SOC150H1 may apply for admission in second year. Students already enrolled in the sociology major may apply to transfer to the specialist program if they achieved a minimum combined average of 70% in SOC201H1, SOC202H1, and SOC204H1. Achieving the 70% minimum mark does not guarantee admission to the program in any given year.

Completion Requirements

Completing a Sociology specialist requires 10 full course equivalents (FCEs).

  1.  SOC101Y1, or a combination of SOC102H1+SOC103H1, SOC102H1+SOC150H1, SOC103H1+SOC150H1, or SOC100H1+SOC150H1.
  2. SOC201H1, SOC202H1, and SOC204H1
  3. SOC251H1, SOC252H1, and SOC254H1
  4. 2.0 SOC FCEs from 300 level “Program-Only” courses (rotating list every year)
  5. 1.0 SOC FCEs at the 400 level
  6. An additional 3.0 FCEs in Sociology at the 200 or 300 level (1.0 of which must be taken at the 300 level, i.e., 2.0 FCEs at the 200 or 300 level and 1.0 at the 300 level)

Sociology Major

Completing a sociology major provides many of the same benefits as the specialist but, requiring seven rather than ten FCEs allows greater flexibility for students who wish to complement their sociology studies with courses from other disciplines. Many students choose to enroll in a double major, bringing a level of interdisciplinarity to their degree.

Entry Requirements

We admit a limited number of students into the Major program each year. Student who have achieved a minimum combined average of 65% in SOC101Y1, or a combination of SOC102H1+SOC103H1, SOC102H1+SOC150H1, SOC103H1+SOC150H1, or SOC100H1+SOC150H1 and who have completed 3.0 FCEs (in any discipline) may apply for admission to the Sociology Major may apply for admission in second year.  Entry into the Major is competitive and achieving the minimum entry requirements does not guarantee admission into the program.

Completion Requirements

Completing a Sociology major requires 7 full course equivalents (FCEs).
