Liberation Unionism: The Case of Trinidad and Tobago
Abstract: Within labor studies, much ink has been spilled on conceptualizing different types of trade unionisms. Using an historical case study analysis of labor union formation and worker mobilization in Trinidad and Tobago, this paper differentiates yet another type of unionism not yet discussed in labor studies literature – “liberation unionism.” The paper brings together scholarship on labor unions with that on Black liberation movements, places the emergence of liberation unions in their socio-historical context, and discusses the generalizability of this concept to other countries.
Bio: Zophia Edwards is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Black Studies at Providence College. Her areas of research and teaching include postcolonial sociology, colonialism, labor movements, race, international development, and political sociology.
