March 10, 2023 by Shreeya Lamba

Congratulations to Neda Maghbouleh, Associate Professor of Sociology and Canada Research Chair in Migration, Race, and Identity, for her recent feature in the No Jargon podcast.

No Jargon is a monthly podcast hosted by the Scholars Strategy Network. It features accomplished researchers discussing recent insights in their areas of expertise in layman’s terms, in order to spread knowledge to both academic and non-academic audiences. Following her recent SSHRC Insight Grant, Maghbouleh has assembled a team to research Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) immigrant communities. Her extensive publications on the subject of MENA identities in America have directly contributed to the rethinking of US Census identity categorizations.

In this episode of the podcast, titled “No Box to Check,” Professor Maghbouleh discusses the missing MENA category in the list of US Census-recognized identities, as well as its impacts on the MENA American community and their sense of identity. She also outlines the steps necessary to increase visibility and representation for the MENA community in America.
