The Department of Sociology is proud to announce that Eduardo Cornelius has been awarded the American Society of Criminology (ASC) Division of White-Collar and Corporate Crime’s (DWCC) Student Paper Award.
Cornelius received this honor for his paper titled, "Discursive Mismatch and Globalization by Stealth: The Fight Against Corruption in the Brazilian Legal Field" in which he explores the complexities of anti-corruption discourse in Brazil, focusing on the contentious debates surrounding a significant 2016 anti-corruption bill. Under the expert supervision of Professors Ron Levi and Sida Liu, with additional insights from Kristin Plys, his research employs a discursive field analysis to dissect the arguments presented by both supporters and critics of the legislation.
Cornelius highlights how these debates have led to what he describes as a “discursive mismatch,” which has facilitated the subtle "globalization by stealth" of international legal ideas within the Brazilian context. His findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how legal discourse shapes policy and governance, particularly in the fight against corruption.
The ASC DWCC Student Paper Award is a prestigious recognition given to outstanding student research in the field of white-collar and corporate crime. This achievement places Eduardo among a select group of scholars making significant contributions to this important area of study.
