Sabbatical Stories: Professor Daniel Silver Researches Suburban Alienation, the Urban Landscape, and Online Influence

July 31, 2024 by Lucas Smith

U of T Sociology professor Daniel Silver has been on research leave this past year, continuing his research and furthering his scholarship in the fields of urban sociology, Internet culture, sociological theory, and more.

Professor Silver co-authored policy reports about “Reimagining Music Venues” and “An Outcomes Framework for Toronto’s Culture Plan.” These reports were published by Wavelength Music and U of T's School of Cities, respectively.

Professor Silver completed a two-week lecture tour of China, where he discussed Scenes Theory and the Post-Industrial Transition. He also participated in a conference at Beijing’s Peking University about the legacy of the Chicago School of Sociology and presented a paper about its influence.

Silver wrote a report based on his work with the Community Voices project supported by U of T and UTSC. The article, co-authored with U of T Associate Professor Prentiss Dantzler and Munk School Senior Fellow Kofi Hope, finds that residents of Toronto’s inner suburbs report greater neighbourhood satisfaction when their sense of place alienation decreases. The full article is published in the Journal of Urban Affairs.

Silver published several articles with U of T PhD Noga Keidar (now Senior Lecturer at Tel Aviv University) about how ideas spread in the urban landscape and he is currently preparing a book proposal on the topic. He made significant progress on his book manuscript The Urban Archipelago, co-written with U of T Assistant Professor Jan Doering and University of Western Ontario Professor Zack Taylor. The book is based on their previous article, “The Spatial Articulation of Urban Political Cleavages,” published in Urban Affairs Review.

Silver is currently editing a special issue on theory visualization in sociology for The American Sociologist, having already published the first paper for that issue with co-author Gordon Brett, a U of T PhD (currently Assistant Professor at Hong Kong University). Silver looks forward to continuing work on his new book about a sociological theory of online influence.

We are thrilled to welcome Professor Silver back for the 2024-2025 academic year!
