We welcome Assistant Professor Sofia Locklear to the Mississauga Department of Sociology. Professor Locklear joined us in 2023 from the University of Western Ontario, where she was Assistant Professor, prior to which she earned her PhD from the University of New Mexico.
Professor Locklear studies the racialization of Indigenous people in North America. This includes but is not limited to white identity formation, health and education outcomes for Indigenous people, as well as applied Indigenous Evaluation in the field of public health. Currently, with funding from the National Science Foundation, Professor Locklear is working on a project about the housing experiences of American Indian/Alaska Native people living in urban settings across the United States.
Methodologically, as a researcher, Professor Locklear seeks to gather and analyze qualitative data as it illuminates the complexities of inequity. Yet, she is also interested in the numerical outcomes that manifest for Indigenous people, and often conducts quantitative data analyses to complement her qualitative work.
Professor Locklear is a recent recipient of the University of Toronto’s Connaught New Researcher Award. Her research has been published in The Canadian Journal of Program Evaluation, Critical Sociology, and the Oxford Handbook of Indigenous Sociology.
