December 19, 2024 by Brigitte Coetzee

The Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto is delighted to welcome Dr. Jun Fang as a new Assistant Professor in our vibrant academic community. Fang brings a dynamic and interdisciplinary approach to the department, with expertise spanning cultural production, the sociology of art, globalization, organizations, and social theory, with a regional focus on China.

Fang joins us from Colby College and holds a PhD in Sociology from Northwestern University. His research offers fresh perspectives on the intersection of art, markets, and the state, with a particular emphasis on China's cultural and organizational responses to globalization. His current book project is an ethnographic examination of how Chinese and Hollywood studios collaborate to create global films, shedding light on the tensions and synergies between nationalism and global cultural exchange.

Expanding beyond film, Dr. Fang's forthcoming research explores the politics of storytelling in journalism, further deepening his engagement with cultural production and qualitative methods. His work has been featured in renowned publications, including the American Sociological Review, Poetics, Qualitative Sociology, Journal of Chinese Sociology, and SAGE Research Methods Foundations.

With a robust research agenda and a passion for teaching, Dr. Fang is poised to contribute to the department’s strengths in the sociology of culture, work, stratification, and markets. We are excited for the rich discussions and collaborations his scholarship will inspire.

Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Dr. Jun Fang as he begins his journey at the University of Toronto!
